IIT Ropar Launches M.Tech Program in Defence Technology with Indian Army

New Delhi: IIT Ropar has taken a historic step by launching an M.Tech program in Defence Technology. This marks a significant milestone in the advancement of defence education and technology in the country.

According to IIT Ropar, this is the first time any IIT in India has established such a comprehensive partnership with the armed forces. The institute has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Army, specifically designed for officers of the Armoured Corps Centre and School (ACC&S).

The initiative aims to empower mid-level officers serving in the army with advanced defence technology skills. The M.Tech (Defence Technology) program has been carefully developed to ensure full alignment between academic rigor and military requirements. The curriculum focuses on practical education, emphasising hands-on research and innovation-driven problem solving. This approach prepares officers to become technology leaders within the armed forces.

Upon successful completion of the M.Tech program, officers will receive a degree from IIT Ropar in Defence Technology. This certification represents the highest standards of technical excellence and innovation. It will enable officers to lead technological modernisation efforts in armoured formations and contribute significantly to indigenous defence manufacturing initiatives.

The partnership lays a broad framework for joint research and development initiatives that address critical technological challenges faced by India’s defence sector. The collaboration focuses on strategic areas such as next-generation armoured fighting vehicle technologies, advanced weapon solutions, and the development of new materials and technologies for armoured platforms.

This initiative reflects an unprecedented collaboration between premier academic institutions and the armed forces. The partnership strengthens India’s path to becoming a global leader in defence technology by 2047. For IITs, this is a pioneering effort that moves beyond traditional academic offerings to build a robust ecosystem combining cutting-edge research, practical innovation, and military operational expertise.

Professor Rajiv Ahuja, Director of IIT Ropar, highlighted the transformative nature of this collaboration. He stated, “This partnership marks a paradigm shift in India’s approach to defence technology education. By integrating IIT Ropar’s intellectual strength with the Indian Army’s operational excellence, we are creating a unique model that will develop defence technology leaders capable of advancing India’s self-reliance in critical defence domains. This is our contribution to a developed India 2047.”

The MoU was formally signed by Major General Vikram Verma, Commandant of ACC&S, and the Director of IIT Ropar. IIT Ropar expects that the research outcomes from this collaboration will benefit not only the armed forces but also civilian applications in fields such as autonomous vehicles, advanced manufacturing, and materials engineering.
