New Delhi: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully carried out a night-time medical evacuation from Agatti Island in Lakshadweep, saving the life of a 55-year-old patient. This marked the second emergency medevac mission conducted by the ICG this month, highlighting its ongoing commitment to humanitarian assistance.

On Monday, the patient suffered a heart attack. The Lakshadweep administration promptly requested assistance from the Coast Guard. In response, the ICG quickly dispatched a Dornier aircraft for the urgent night medevac operation.

Considering the medical emergency and the challenges of conducting an operation over the sea at night, the Dornier aircraft based in Kochi was rapidly converted into a mobile intensive care unit (MICU). This ensured continuous life-support care for the patient during the flight.

The entire operation was planned and executed within a very short time frame, with swift assessment of the medical emergency, weather conditions, and night flying difficulties. The Coast Guard demonstrated remarkable efficiency by fitting the MICU equipment and dispatching the aircraft in the evening.

The aircraft safely landed on Agatti Island during the night, where the patient was quickly onboarded. The flight then returned to Kochi, where the patient was transferred to Aster Medcity Hospital for further treatment.

This mission’s success under challenging conditions showcased the Indian Coast Guard’s capability to conduct time-critical humanitarian operations. It also reflected excellent coordination between the Coast Guard and the Lakshadweep administration.

By undertaking such operations, the Indian Coast Guard continues to uphold its commitment to saving lives, especially in remote island regions, living up to its motto “वयं रक्षामः” (We Protect).
