Amol Mazumdar Reflects on Critical Changes After World Cup Loss to England

Indian womens cricket coach Amol Mazumdar discusses necessary actions taken after a disappointing World Cup loss to England.

New Delhi, November 3 (Daily Kiran) : Amol Mazumdar, head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team, has shared insights into the pivotal decisions made following their defeat to England during the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. The loss prompted Mazumdar to address team shortcomings directly in the dressing room, believing that immediate intervention was essential for the team’s turnaround.

Despite objections from his support staff, Mazumdar chose to engage with the players after the team’s third loss in the group stage. This defeat was particularly disheartening, as the team had aimed for a significant victory against England. However, their inability to finish the match led Mazumdar to adopt a different approach in his discussions with the players.

Reflecting on the circumstances that influenced his decision, Mazumdar emphasized that a routine conversation would not suffice to instigate the necessary changes. He explained, “The match against England, which we needed to win by a good margin, ended in defeat. This was our third loss in the World Cup. I was not happy about it, nor were the players. I decided we needed to take action. Nothing would change unless we did something.”

Mazumdar faced resistance from his support staff, who advised against immediate action. However, he was resolute, stating, “If not now, then when?” He insisted on closing the windows to prevent outside distractions and spoke from the heart, focusing on the team’s improvement. Fortunately, the players responded positively, understanding that the conversation aimed at enhancing their performance.

He highlighted the gap between the team’s potential and their actual performance during matches. Mazumdar expressed that individual talent must translate into results when it matters most, rather than being confined to practice sessions.

The coach also noted the players’ responses to his intense message, appreciating how well they received his words in the dressing room. “Everyone knows how talented these players are. I was fortunate to coach such gifted athletes. But talent means nothing unless it is showcased on the field. You can talk in the dressing room, meetings, or hotels, but it only matters when you demonstrate it on the pitch. I wanted them to understand that,” he stated.

The Indian women’s team ultimately triumphed over South Africa in the finals, claiming the ODI World Cup 2025 title, marking their first ICC championship.
