Udaipur, 28 August 2025 (Kiran News): Hindustan Zinc, India’s only and the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, has announced a strategic partnership with Epiroc through an MoU to enhance digital safety technologies in mining. The initiative will begin with the phased implementation of Epiroc’s Collision Avoidance System at the Sindesar Khurd Mine in RAJASTHAN’s Rajsamand district, one of the world’s top five silver-producing mines. This system will later be expanded to all underground mines operated by Hindustan Zinc.

Innovative Digital Safety Measures

In the pilot phase, the Collision Avoidance System will be installed on 30 Low Profile Dump Trucks (LPDTs)—specialised vehicles essential for efficient ore management. Designed for both surface and underground mining, this system continuously monitors the vehicle’s surroundings, detects nearby equipment and personnel, and provides real-time visual and audio alerts to operators, enhancing awareness and strengthening risk management.

The project incorporates advanced digitisation with proximity sensors, operator display units, and wearable personal tags connected via a centralised platform. This enables continuous data capture and analysis, supporting safety audits, regulatory compliance, and strategic decision-making. Built to the highest safety standards, the system offers modular scalability and seamless integration with existing machinery. Its multi-layered safety approach includes early warnings, operator guidance, and autonomous interventions to actively reduce collision risks, optimise operational efficiency, and maintain top standards of workforce safety.

Commitment to Safe and Sustainable Mining

Hindustan Zinc Limited’s CEO and Whole-Time Director, Arun Mishra, stated that metals like zinc, lead, and silver are critical for clean energy transition and modern technology. “As the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, Hindustan Zinc is committed to adopting digital innovations that enhance both productivity and safety. Integrating Epiroc’s Collision Avoidance System reinforces our commitment to operational excellence and technical leadership, and will help ensure safer, smarter, and more sustainable mining operations,” he said.

Helena Hedblom, President & CEO of Epiroc AB, called the partnership a historic advancement in mining safety technology. “The Collision Avoidance System demonstrates how digital innovation, intelligent sensing, real-time alerts, and autonomous vehicle control can actively reduce risks. We are proud to partner with Hindustan Zinc in deploying this adaptable, scalable solution to protect personnel and strengthen operations. Together, we are setting new global benchmarks for safe and efficient underground mining.”

Phased Implementation and Global Recognition

The project will be completed in two phases. The first phase covers installation, calibration, comprehensive operator training, and ongoing maintenance for 30 LPDTs at the Sindesar Khurd Mine. The second phase will extend company-wide, integrating the Collision Avoidance System into all underground vehicles as part of Hindustan Zinc’s broader safety protocols.

This initiative aligns with Hindustan Zinc’s strong ESG credentials. The company has been ranked the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company for the second consecutive year by S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2024. In 2025, Hindustan Zinc also became the first Indian company to join the International Council on Mining and Metals.

With over five decades of expertise in the metals and mining sector, Hindustan Zinc continues to integrate advanced solutions like automation, remote operations, and precision monitoring. The collaboration with Epiroc further strengthens its journey towards a safe, smart, and sustainable mining environment.
