Pathanamthitta, April 26: An investigation into the low-altitude flight of an Indian Coast Guard helicopter near the renowned Sabarimala temple in Kerala has intensified. The report by ADGP S. Sreejit classified the unauthorized flight over the Sabarimala Sannidhanam temple as a significant error.
The report states that citing poor weather as a reason for flying at a low altitude is not acceptable and constitutes a dangerous act. It concluded that the helicopter reached an altitude of just 5 meters above the temple. There are also suspicions that individuals aboard the helicopter took photographs during the flight. The ADGP has submitted the report to the special commissioner of Sabarimala.
The special commissioner will forward this report to the High Court. Clarifications will be sought from the air traffic controller regarding this incident. The Pathanamthitta SP has been assigned to conduct a thorough investigation. The Pampa police have registered a case in this matter. The pilot faces charges for flying the helicopter in a high-security area, which jeopardized public safety. This case was registered based on a complaint from the police officer responsible for security at Sannidhanam.
The Pampa police have filed the case under Section 118 of the Kerala Police Act, which carries a penalty of ₹10,000 and up to three years of imprisonment. The helicopter was reported to be flying dangerously over a flagpole and nearby buildings.
The special commissioner of Sabarimala informed the High Court that the helicopter passed over a high-security zone. The Coast Guard office in Kochi stated that the helicopter deviated from its course due to cloudy weather and was flying at a low altitude.
