Heavy Snow Disrupts Life in Srinagar, Flights Cancelled and Highways Closed

Srinagar is experiencing significant disruption as continuous light to moderate snowfall has affected daily life across the city and surrounding areas. The snowfall has led to the closure of several routes and cancellation of multiple flights, causing inconvenience to residents and travellers alike.

The accumulation of snow on the airside pavement at Srinagar International Airport since Friday morning has hindered flight operations. Teams from the Border Roads Organisation are actively clearing snow in the operational areas to ensure the runway is safe for aircraft movements.

Due to adverse weather conditions, several flights have been delayed, and a total of eight flights have been cancelled so far. Authorities have urged passengers to check with their respective airlines for the latest flight status before heading to the airport to avoid unnecessary inconvenience.

Road Traffic Severely Impacted

The snowfall has had the most pronounced effect on road transportation. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-244), particularly the Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag stretch, has been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure due to heavy snow accumulation. Currently, no vehicular movement is permitted between Jammu and Srinagar in either direction. Additionally, Mughal Road, Sinthan Road, and SSG Road remain closed, virtually cutting off road connectivity to the Kashmir Valley.

The administration and traffic police have issued strict advisories, urging people to avoid unnecessary travel until all roads are cleared and declared safe for traffic. Citizens and travellers are also requested to rely solely on official updates and not to spread or believe in rumours.

Authorities Enhance Communication and Support

To monitor the situation closely, the traffic police have increased their presence on social media platforms. For assistance or updated information, the public can contact the Traffic Control Unit in Srinagar at helpline numbers 0194-2450022, 2485396, 18001807091, or 103. For the Ramban area, helpline numbers 9419993745 and 1800-180-7043 have been issued.

The administration has assured that efforts will be made to restore road and air services at the earliest as weather conditions improve.
