Heavy Rains

Kolkata, September 25 (Udaipur Kiran News): Life in Kolkata is slowly returning to normal after heavy rains earlier this week left the city paralyzed. Officials confirmed on Thursday that the death toll has risen to 11, including nine electrocution cases in the city and two more deaths in South 24 Parganas and nearby districts.

Heavy Rains

The torrential downpour, which began Monday night and lasted until Tuesday afternoon, recorded 251.4 mm of rainfall in less than 24 hours—the sixth-highest in 137 years and the heaviest since 1986. Streets across the city turned into waterlogged canals, bringing traffic, transport, and daily life to a standstill.

By Thursday morning, most waterlogging had eased, but several areas including Patuli, Santoshpur, Ballygunge, Salt Lake, and Bidhannagar remained affected. With just two days left for Durga Puja festivities, authorities face mounting pressure to restore normalcy, as several puja pandals are still submerged.

Transport services, including air, rail, road, and metro, were severely disrupted, while schools and colleges were forced to close. The state government also announced early Durga Puja holidays due to the situation.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rain with isolated thunderstorms over the next 24 hours. However, a new low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal could bring heavy to very heavy rain across parts of South Bengal over the weekend, coinciding with the start of Durga Puja.
