Chennai, February 22: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued a heavy rain alert for parts of southern Tamil Nadu. The RMC has warned of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in districts including Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, and Virudhunagar, urging residents to stay vigilant. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea.

According to the RMC, a low-pressure area has formed over the equatorial Indian Ocean and the adjoining southeastern Bay of Bengal. This weather pattern is likely to bring moderate rainfall to various locations in southern and northern Tamil Nadu, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal.

The weather department has also forecast light rain in some areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry between February 23 and 25. On Sunday, Chennai and Puducherry are expected to experience partly cloudy skies, with no significant rainfall anticipated within the city limits.

The meteorological department noted that winds could reach speeds of up to 60 km/h along the Gulf of Mannar and the southern Tamil Nadu coast, as well as parts of the Comorin Sea and the Bay of Bengal.

In light of the strong winds and high waves, the regional meteorological centre has reiterated its advice for fishermen to avoid these areas. Weather department officials are closely monitoring weather conditions and sea activities. Disaster relief teams are on standby to manage any emergencies.

Residents in southern Tamil Nadu have been urged to remain alert, particularly in areas at risk of flooding and waterlogging. The weather department stated that warnings will be issued based on conditions over the next 24 to 48 hours.
