Heavy Rain Forecast for Kolkata and South Bengal, Red Alert Issued

Kolkata, August 18: The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall in Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal over the next two days due to an active low-pressure area and monsoon winds.

A red alert has been issued for Bankura, West Midnapore, and Jhargram districts for heavy to very heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Kolkata reported that the low-pressure area over the northwestern Bay of Bengal has strengthened in recent hours and is expected to develop into a depression by Monday.

The monsoon axis stretches from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand to the low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, resulting in continuous heavy rainfall in South Bengal until Tuesday.

On Monday, very heavy rainfall is likely in Howrah, Hooghly, Purulia, East Bardhaman, West Bardhaman, South 24 Parganas, and East Midnapore districts. Heavy rainfall is also expected in Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia districts.

On Tuesday, heavy rainfall may occur in isolated areas of West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, West Bardhaman, and Birbhum districts. Other districts in South Bengal will experience rain with thunderstorms. Rainfall is expected to decrease in South Bengal from Tuesday evening. Currently, no further weather warnings have been issued.

Due to the low pressure, strong winds are blowing at speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour over the sea. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the northern Bay of Bengal near the coasts of West Bengal and Odisha until Tuesday.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall will continue in North Bengal until Tuesday. Heavy rain is expected in Jalpaiguri and Kalimpong districts on Monday, while Alipurduar and Darjeeling districts are likely to experience heavy rainfall on Tuesday. Scattered rain with thunderstorms will persist in North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, Malda, and Cooch Behar until Tuesday.

Since Monday morning, Kolkata has experienced heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogging in several areas. The continuous rain has slowed traffic in the city and its surroundings. On Monday morning, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, which is 1.5 degrees below normal. The maximum temperature on Sunday was 30 degrees Celsius, also 1.9 degrees below normal.
