Chennai, August 1: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds in parts of Tamil Nadu, particularly in the western region, due to a weakened low-pressure system over the coastal areas of the state.
According to the weather department, districts such as Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Nilgiris, Theni, and Kanyakumari are likely to experience widespread rainfall, with heavy rain expected in hilly and valley areas.
There is also a risk of strong winds alongside the rainfall, prompting officials to advise residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert.
The IMD indicated that the conditions for rainfall in the Western Ghats districts will remain favorable in the coming days due to the presence of the weakened low-pressure system along the Tamil Nadu coast.
As a result, moderate rainfall is expected to continue in these districts until August 6.
Weather officials noted that the current atmospheric conditions will keep the region under the influence of moisture-laden winds, leading to intermittent rain.
In addition to the heavy rain forecast for hilly districts, the weather department has predicted moderate rainfall in one or two locations in the northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, accompanied by strong winds.
While there is no immediate threat of flooding, some isolated areas may experience brief intense rainfall, especially during the evening and night hours.
The weather forecast also indicates changes in conditions in Chennai, with moderate rainfall expected in some parts of the city during the evening or night, providing temporary relief from the ongoing heat.
Despite the possibility of rain, daytime temperatures are expected to remain high, with maximum temperatures likely reaching around 38 degrees Celsius.
In other parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, the IMD has predicted a slight decrease in daytime temperatures.
Due to cloud cover and rain activity associated with the current weather system, a drop of up to 2 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures is anticipated over the next few days.
The weather department is closely monitoring the changing conditions, as rainfall is expected to continue in many parts of the state through the first week of August.
