Heavy Rain

Thiruvananthapuram, October 12 (DailyKiran) — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for Kerala, warning that a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea is likely to intensify weather conditions across the state over the next few days.

Heavy Rain

According to the IMD, the system is expected to bring widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds between October 11 and 15. Along with Kerala, nearby coastal regions such as Mahe are also likely to experience strong winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Yellow Alert in Several Districts

The weather department has issued a yellow alert in multiple districts, including Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Wayanad, predicting heavy rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm on October 12.

The IMD further stated that between October 12 and 17, some parts of Kerala could receive 7 to 11 cm of rain every 24 hours, indicating continued wet conditions throughout the week.

Authorities have advised residents to stay alert for landslides, flash floods, and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.

Rough Seas and Fishing Ban

The IMD has also warned of rough sea conditions in Lakshadweep and along the Kerala and Karnataka coasts due to strong winds reaching up to 55 kmph. As a precautionary measure, fishing activities have been suspended in these regions to ensure the safety of fishermen.

The weather agency said that Lakshadweep will also experience thunderstorms and heavy rains on October 11 and 12.

Northeast Monsoon Expected Soon

Meteorologists expect the northeast monsoon to begin in Kerala by the end of October, slightly later than usual. The seasonal rainfall, typically beginning in mid-October, is likely to intensify showers once it sets in.

Officials have warned that heavy rainfall could lead to flooding, road closures, uprooted trees, power outages, and damage to weak structures in some areas.
