Heavy Rain Alert for 22 Districts in Tamil Nadu: Expect Showers for a Week

Chennai, June 2: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in 22 districts of Tamil Nadu. This weather activity is primarily due to a cyclonic circulation over southern Kerala and the adjacent Tamil Nadu region.

According to the meteorological department, the effects of this system may lead to continuous rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the next week. Significant rainfall is expected in various locations across the western, central, and southern parts of the state.

The districts forecasted to experience heavy rainfall include Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Karur, Namakkal, Erode, Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, and Kanyakumari.

Meteorologists have indicated that strong winds may accompany the rainfall in several areas, raising concerns about lightning strikes. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and seek shelter during adverse weather conditions.

The weather department predicts that heavy rainfall will persist in many parts of western and southern Tamil Nadu for the next two days. Particularly intense rainfall is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Tiruppur, Tenkasi, Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Erode, Namakkal, and Salem.

Additionally, similar weather conditions are anticipated in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, and Tiruvannamalai districts.

Officials have reported that the cyclonic circulation over southern Kerala and the surrounding Tamil Nadu region is drawing in significant moisture from the Arabian Sea and nearby areas. This has accelerated cloud formation, resulting in widespread rainfall.

In the capital city, Chennai, the sky is expected to be generally overcast on Tuesday. However, the weather may remain hot and humid, with maximum temperatures reaching around 40 degrees Celsius. Light rain may occur in the city and its surrounding areas, but heavy rainfall is not currently anticipated.

Authorities have advised residents in low-lying and hilly areas to exercise caution, stay updated on official weather warnings, and take necessary precautions.
