— Children Face Hardship Getting to School in Morning, Sewer Overflow Reported

Varanasi, 23 August (Kiran News). Continuous heavy rain through Friday night and into Saturday morning turned the roads and lanes of Varanasi’s lower areas into water pools. Waterlogging in the streets caused major inconvenience for school-going children and commuters in the morning. In several areas of the city such as Godowlia, Naisadak, Maidagin, BHU, Lahartara, Chandpur, and Rohania, people had to wade through knee-deep water. In rural regions like Babatpur, Harahua, and Chaubepur, people also struggled with waterlogging. Amidst the flooded lanes, children were seen enjoying themselves by floating paper boats.
According to the Meteorological Department, the continuous rain was due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal and a western disturbance. It rained throughout Friday night, and intermittent rainfall is expected to continue till 25 August. Earlier, some areas of the city also received rainfall on Friday afternoon, leading to a drop in temperatures. After receiving more than 105 mm of rainfall, the maximum temperature in Varanasi at 10 AM on Saturday was recorded at 28 degrees Celsius and the minimum at 26 degrees Celsius. Humidity stood at 86 percent and visibility at 25 percent. On Friday, the maximum temperature in Varanasi was 32.5 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 24.5 degrees Celsius, which was 1.3 degrees below normal. The heavy overnight rain brought relief and joy to farmers in the district’s rural areas, as it was seen as a boon for the paddy crop.
— Congress State President Criticises Waterlogging on Social Media
After a night of rain and subsequent waterlogging in Varanasi, Congress State President Ajay Rai targeted the government through social media. On his official X (formerly Twitter) account, he wrote that a few months ago, Chief Minister Yogi had inaugurated the grand ‘Sangeet Path’ along with the entire cabinet, officials, and public representatives of Varanasi. Everyone had worked hard, and now, the waterlogging after the rain is showing the results of that hard work.
