According to the National Health Mission (NHM), blood pressure is a major cause of several serious physical and mental health problems. High blood pressure is often referred to as a “silent killer” because many individuals do not exhibit symptoms. However, if left uncontrolled, it can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, and other severe illnesses. Low blood pressure, on the other hand, is sometimes described as a slow poison.

The NHM guidelines indicate that timely check-ups and appropriate measures can help manage blood pressure effectively. Ignoring high blood pressure is dangerous as it gradually damages arteries, increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney issues.

The NHM also suggests simple and effective measures for controlling blood pressure, which include:

1. Take Medication on Time: Never skip your medication. Strictly adhere to the dosage and schedule prescribed by your doctor. Initially, medications like Amlodipine are common. Alongside medication, lifestyle changes are essential.

2. Measure Blood Pressure Daily: Regular check-ups at home or health centers are crucial. Measure your blood pressure in the morning and evening. This helps monitor your condition and provides timely information to your doctor.

3. Limit Salt Intake: Keep daily salt consumption below 5 grams (one teaspoon). Reduce packaged foods, pickles, chips, and outside meals. Lowering salt intake can help decrease blood pressure.

4. Stay Hydrated: Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily. Dehydration can affect blood pressure. Water aids in flushing out excess sodium from the body.

5. Exercise Regularly: Engage in brisk walking, cycling, yoga, or light exercises for 30-45 minutes daily. This helps maintain weight and can lower blood pressure.

Additionally, pay attention to other important factors such as maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake, consuming more fruits and vegetables, and practicing meditation or yoga to reduce stress. Regular check-ups and lifestyle changes can effectively manage high blood pressure. If blood pressure remains uncontrolled, consult a doctor immediately.
