Gujarats ₹20,667 Crore Double Line Railway Project Receives Cabinet Approval

New Delhi, May 13: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Ahmedabad (Sarkhej)-Dholera semi-high-speed double line railway project. This initiative marks the first railway project in India to be developed using indigenous technology, with a total estimated cost of ₹20,667 crore.

According to the Cabinet’s statement, this railway project will provide rapid connectivity between Ahmedabad, the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), the upcoming Dholera Airport, and the Lothal National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC).

The new railway line between Ahmedabad and Dholera will significantly reduce travel time for passengers, allowing for comfortable daily commutes and same-day round trips. This semi-high-speed railway will not only connect the two cities but also benefit residents from hundreds of kilometers away.

The government stated that this project will serve as a model for the phased expansion of the semi-high-speed rail network across the country.

Located in Ahmedabad district, this project will add approximately 134 kilometers to the Indian railway network. The proposed rail line will enhance connectivity for around 284 villages, home to nearly 500,000 people.

The new railway line will improve direct connectivity and mobility, thereby increasing the efficiency and reliability of Indian Railways services. The statement highlighted that this project aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of ‘New India,’ aimed at empowering local communities through comprehensive development and creating job opportunities.

This initiative has been developed under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which emphasizes enhancing multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency through coordinated planning with various stakeholders.

According to the government, this project will facilitate the movement of people, goods, and services. As a sustainable and energy-efficient mode of transport, the railway will also contribute to achieving the country’s climate goals.

The project is expected to reduce oil imports by approximately 0.48 crore liters and cut down CO2 emissions by about 2 crore kilograms. This impact is equivalent to planting nearly 1 million trees.
