Gujarat Titans Captain Gill Reflects on Mistakes After IPL 2026 Loss to RCB

Dharmshala, May 27: The Gujarat Titans (GT) faced a crushing defeat against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 92 runs in Qualifier 1 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Following the match, GT captain Shubman Gill acknowledged that poor fielding and mistakes made under pressure significantly impacted the team’s performance, leading to their loss.

With this defeat, Gujarat’s hopes of reaching the finals directly were dashed. The reigning champions, RCB, secured their spot in the IPL final for the second consecutive year by bowling out GT for just 162 runs in response to their massive total of 254/5.

After the match, Gill stated, “I think we were playing well until the 12th or 13th over. Our fielding was not up to par. We dropped some catches, and our ground fielding was also unsatisfactory.”

RCB captain Rajat Patidar capitalized on these missed opportunities, scoring an unbeaten 93 runs off just 39 balls. Gujarat’s misfielding and no-balls during the middle overs allowed RCB to set the highest score in IPL playoff history.

Reflecting on the loss, Gill described it as a match the team would want to quickly move past. He said, “This is one of those matches we would like to forget and start fresh in Mohali.”

Despite the disappointing outcome, Gill emphasized that the team regularly practices fielding during training sessions and meetings. He added, “We do discuss this in team meetings and practice sessions. There was enthusiasm, but we couldn’t live up to expectations under pressure.”

Chasing a challenging target of 255 runs on a batting-friendly pitch in Dharmshala, Gujarat lost wickets at regular intervals. Gill was dismissed for just two runs off Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s bowling, while Jos Buttler’s quick 29 runs were the only bright spot early on. Rahul Tewatia fought valiantly, scoring 68 runs off 43 balls.

Gill believed that a strong start in the powerplay could have made a difference. He remarked, “A good start is everything. On a ground like this, where the ball travels quickly and the outfield is fast, if we had a good powerplay, any target could have been chased down.”

The captain also commented on Sai Sudharsan’s unfortunate dismissal, where he lost control of his bat while playing a shot, resulting in the stumps being knocked over. Gill noted, “Such a dismissal is rarely seen, so it was very unfortunate.”

The Gujarat Titans will now aim to regroup quickly before their next knockout match in Mohali, as they seek to keep their hopes of reaching the IPL 2026 final alive.
