Gujarat Government Implements Advanced Technology for Traffic Discipline

Ahmedabad, March 6: Traffic issues in major cities are escalating as people rush and often violate traffic rules. To tackle this problem, the Gujarat government has adopted cutting-edge technology.

Under the Safe Gujarat campaign, the state police have installed numerous CCTV cameras at busy intersections and roads. Traffic Monitoring Centers have also been established to oversee these cameras. The digitization of traffic movement monitoring and the e-challan process is aiding in traffic regulation and improving compliance among rule violators.

Local resident Ravindra Patel shared, “I live in Bopal. I was heading to my shop but mistakenly left my helmet at home. The traffic police issued me an e-challan, which I paid immediately at the cyber control room.”

Another resident, Vyomesh Baboolal, stated, “The rules set by the government are for our safety. I also received an e-memo and paid it promptly. The notice came to my home, but I visited the office and settled it in two minutes. This incident taught me a lesson, and I won’t make such mistakes again.”

Notably, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India vision, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel is ensuring strict adherence to traffic rules through the ‘Transport Portal’ and ‘e-challan system.’ As a result, the state collected a total revenue of ₹1,537.8 million from traffic rule violators in 2023, ₹1,958.7 million in 2024, and approximately ₹2,310 million in 2025.

Over three years, fines exceeding ₹58.1 billion have been collected, with nearly 14.5 million challans issued to drivers. In 2025 alone, over 8.5 million challans were issued, with 7.6 million sent online. Ahmedabad accounted for 4.02 million of these challans.

Ahmedabad’s Traffic DCP Naresh Kanjaria emphasized the need for digitization in the city, which has yielded significant success. E-monitoring through the control room allows for immediate action against traffic violators. The use of CCTV cameras also aids in monitoring fatal accidents and major criminal incidents. Digitization has strengthened surveillance, greatly benefiting law enforcement.

He noted that fines have primarily been issued for riding two-wheelers without helmets, driving on the wrong side, and improper parking. According to the traffic police, the Safe Gujarat campaign aims not to increase revenue but to enhance road safety and save lives. CCTV footage helps identify accident locations, enabling prompt assistance for victims.

The Gujarat government’s smart traffic management process and online challan system are raising awareness among drivers about traffic rule compliance and proving effective in establishing a disciplined traffic system in the state.
