Gandhinagar, October 12 (Daily Kiran) : Gujarat police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani and seven others for allegedly obstructing a police officer’s duties, creating a disturbance at the Pethapur police station, and attempting to incite tensions between communities. This incident occurred during the campaigning for the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation elections.
The FIR was registered on the night of October 8, coinciding with the local body elections. According to the police station officer, no arrests have been made so far in connection with this case.
The complaint states that on October 8, Congress candidate Yunus Parmar was summoned to the police station for questioning. He was accused of threatening a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) campaigner, Bhavesh Bhavsar, along with his associates.
Inspector A.M. Desai reported that around 10 PM on that night, Parmar and his group allegedly intimidated Bhavsar, warning him not to campaign in their area, threatening severe consequences if he did.
Following this, a written complaint was lodged against Parmar and unidentified accomplices at the Pethapur police station. Desai claims that while they were questioning Parmar regarding the complaint, Mevani and the other accused formed an unlawful assembly and entered the interrogation room.
It is alleged that they hindered the inspector from performing his duties, used abusive language, created chaos, and prevented Parmar from providing his statement.
Additionally, the complaint alleges that Mevani and the others sat outside the police station with supporters, chanting slogans invoking the Thakor community’s name. Desai contends that their actions aimed to incite the public against the police, tarnish the police force’s reputation, disrupt peace, and escalate community tensions.
The FIR also claims that the accused recorded the incident on mobile phones and shared footage on social media with the intent to foster animosity between different communities.
Their actions reportedly violated a notification issued by the Additional District Magistrate of Gandhinagar. Mevani and the others have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including obstruction of public servants, criminal intimidation, and intentional insult to provoke a breach of peace. Additionally, Section 135 of the Gujarat Police Act has been invoked. The FIR was filed during the voting for 11 wards of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation.
