Ahmedabad, June 27: The Gujarat Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a serving sub-inspector and a head constable from the Bopal police station in Ahmedabad for allegedly soliciting and accepting a bribe of ₹500,000.
The accused reportedly demanded this amount to prevent criminal action from being initiated in a case against the complainant.
The complainant approached the bureau after alleging that the accused officers were investigating an application filed against him at the Bopal police station.
During the investigation, the officers initially demanded ₹1,000,000 to ensure that no criminal case would be registered against the complainant. However, after negotiations, this amount was allegedly reduced to ₹500,000.
Acting on the complaint, the Kheda ACB team set up a trap with independent witness panellists.
During the operation, head constable Dilipkumar Bhoi allegedly communicated with the complainant and accepted the bribe of ₹500,000.
He then contacted sub-inspector Preetlal Chaudhary via mobile phone on speaker mode to inform him about the receipt of the money, to which Chaudhary reportedly consented over the phone.
The constable was caught red-handed with the cash, while the sub-inspector was not present at the scene. The entire amount was seized, and both officers have been charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
This incident is part of a recent series of ACB actions against police personnel in Gujarat.
In a similar case in Ahmedabad, an assistant sub-inspector and two members of the village guard were caught accepting a bribe of ₹30,000 from a cosmetic manufacturer. They had initially demanded a higher amount and were apprehended during a sting operation, with cash recovered on-site.
