The Indian government has introduced a new version of the PAN card, called PAN 2.0, aimed at enhancing security and preventing fraud. This updated PAN card features a laser-printed QR code that stores key information such as name, date of birth, PAN number, and photo in an encrypted format. This makes it extremely difficult to counterfeit and allows instant verification anywhere.
Updating to PAN 2.0 is beneficial for users still holding the old PAN card, and the fee for the upgrade is only ₹50.
A major advantage of the PAN 2.0 update is the convenience of applying online from home, without the need to visit government offices or service centres. The government has delegated the issuance of PAN cards to two authorised agencies: Protean (formerly NSDL e-Governance) and UTIITSL. The agency managing your PAN is mentioned on the back of your current card, and you should apply through the respective website accordingly.
To convert a PAN issued by NSDL to PAN 2.0, applicants need to visit the official PAN service portal and select the “Reprint of PAN Card” option. They must enter their PAN number, Aadhaar number, and date of birth. After receiving and verifying the OTP sent to the registered mobile number or email, the applicant pays the ₹50 fee. The upgraded PAN card is typically delivered within 15 to 20 days, with a soft copy available for download within 24 hours.
Similarly, PAN holders registered with UTIITSL should visit the UTIITSL website, choose the Reprint PAN Card option, and follow the same steps: entering details, OTP verification, fee payment, and receiving the new PAN 2.0 card at home.
The embedded QR code on PAN 2.0 speeds up verification processes while significantly improving data security. This initiative aims to eliminate fake PAN cards, making tax filing and banking transactions more secure and reliable. The government’s move represents a key step towards strengthening digital identity verification and fraud prevention in India.
