New Delhi, June 12: In a significant move to support onion farmers across the country, the central government has announced an increase in the Minimum Assured Purchase Price (MAPP). Union Minister Prahlad Joshi shared this update, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhance onion procurement and ensure better prices for farmers.
Joshi posted on the social media platform ‘X’ that he held a crucial meeting with officials from the Consumer Affairs Department. The discussions focused on improving the onion procurement system and guaranteeing better prices for farmers’ produce.
As a result of the meeting, the government has revised the MAPP to ₹1,650 per quintal, taking into account the quality of storable onions and current market prices. This new rate will come into effect on June 13.
The minister noted that the changes are not limited to the purchase price alone; the entire pricing process has been made more practical and aligned with market conditions.
The government believes that this decision will provide onion-producing farmers with better prices for their crops and help maintain price stability in the market. This initiative is seen as a significant step towards increasing farmers’ incomes and strengthening the agricultural sector.
It is important to note that the central government does not set an official Minimum Support Price (MSP) for onions, as it is a perishable crop. Instead, the government purchases onions from farmers under the Price Stabilization Fund (PSF) at the MAPP to protect them from losses.
