Gmail for Android Gets Docked Reply Bar, Replacing Quick Reply UI

Google is quietly rolling out a new docked reply bar in the Gmail app for Android, replacing the previously introduced “quick reply” interface. The update is gradually appearing for users running Gmail version 2025.05.04.x, though it’s not yet universally available across all devices.

From Quick Replies to Persistent Toolbar

Originally introduced last year, Gmail’s quick reply UI brought a messaging-style interface that allowed users to compose short responses while still viewing the email content. Google promoted it as ideal for “quick, lightweight responses.” However, due to performance and quality issues, especially among Workspace users, the feature was later rolled back — though it continued to be available for personal Gmail accounts.

Now, Google seems to be phasing it out entirely.

What’s New in the Docked Reply Bar?

In place of the quick reply UI, users are seeing a persistent toolbar fixed at the bottom of the screen. This docked bar includes the core email response actions:

  • Reply

  • Reply All

  • Forward

  • Emoji reactions

These options were previously accessible only after scrolling to the bottom of an email thread. The new docked bar keeps them always visible, offering quicker access while reading.

UI Adjustments and Functionality

Though the docked reply bar slightly reduces available screen space, the impact on readability appears minimal. When Gmail’s bottom navigation for Chat or Meet is also active, the bars are stacked. However, to maintain a clean view, the navigation bar disappears on scroll, leaving only the reply bar visible.

This change is being rolled out gradually, and appears to be active on roughly half the devices/accounts tested so far. Users testing AI features through Workspace Labs do not seem to have the new UI yet.

What to Expect

Google has not issued an official statement on the change or its broader rollout plans. However, based on current visibility, this docked bar could soon become the default interface for Gmail replies on Android.
