Melbourne: Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has signed a new two-year contract with the Melbourne Stars, the team announced on Tuesday. Maxwell has been a key player for the Stars since joining in the second season of the Big Bash League (BBL).
Over 123 matches, Maxwell has scored 3,193 runs wearing the green jersey and established himself as one of the greatest players in BBL history. He is the third-highest run-scorer in the league’s history. However, his performance last season was below expectations, with just 76 runs and two wickets in eight innings.
The 37-year-old’s previous contract ended after the 15th BBL season, but Maxwell said staying with the Melbourne Stars was an easy decision. He expressed his passion for the team and confidence in their potential for success in the coming seasons.
“Melbourne Stars have been a major part of my cricket career, and I am very passionate about this team’s success,” Maxwell said. “I believe this current group is preparing to achieve something special, and I am confident we will be contenders for the title over the next two seasons. We are excited about how the team is shaping up for BBL 16. The core group has made significant progress, and we look forward to coming together again.”
Melbourne Stars’ T20 High Performance Manager Clint McKay praised Maxwell’s commitment. “Glenn has been one of the world’s best T20 players for a long time, and his dedication to the Stars is invaluable to us,” he said.
In addition to Maxwell, the Stars have extended the contract of young left-handed batsman Campbell Kellaway for two more years. Kellaway played all 11 matches this season and impressed fans with his potential, bringing stability to the top order. Team management highlighted his importance for the future, noting his consistent performances.
Furthermore, 20-year-old young talent Austin Anglesark has also signed an additional one-year deal with the Melbourne Stars. This extension comes ahead of the BBL player movement window opening on Wednesday, during which clubs can trade players and sign eligible free agents from January 28 to February 5.
The Melbourne Stars appear focused on retaining a strong squad as they prepare for the upcoming season, aiming to build on their past performances and challenge for the championship.
