General Upendra Dwivedi Highlights Ethics in Military Leadership and Family Values

New Delhi, April 10: Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi recently shared his insights and experiences in a podcast. He discussed critical issues such as ethics in military decisions, Operation Sindoor, faith, and the impact of personal life.

In an episode of the IIMUN podcast, hosted by Rishabh Shah, General Dwivedi reflected on the influences that have shaped his leadership over the years. This podcast is known for revealing the early experiences of public figures that have significantly impacted their lives.

While discussing the decisions made during Operation Sindoor, General Dwivedi emphasized that the army operates not just on strategy but also on humanitarian and ethical values. He shared a significant example where, despite having complete control over the timing of an attack, he chose not to act at a specific moment.

When asked whether he considered the teachings of Lord Krishna to Arjuna during Operation Sindoor, General Dwivedi explained, “When we had to destroy these targets, the timing could have been at two or four o’clock, anytime. But we ensured that we did not take action when the people on the other side were praying, because ‘the owner of all is one’. Therefore, we chose a time when we knew they would not be praying.”

This statement illustrates that even in wartime situations, the Indian Army respects faith and human emotions. It reflects a leadership style where strength and restraint coexist.

In the podcast, General Dwivedi also shed light on personal aspects of his life that have influenced his leadership. He specifically mentioned his daughters.

In response to a question about what his daughters bring to his life that is different from his wife, General Dwivedi stated, “My daughters have taught me that to communicate with someone, you must come down to their level. You cannot always remain six feet above.” His words reflect a leadership approach that values human connection over rank and authority.

General Dwivedi noted that his daughters inspire him to advocate for social and workplace changes within the Indian Army.

Connecting these lessons to the broader changes occurring within the army, he added, “How do we change social status? How do we alter working methods within the Indian Army? They always guide me in this regard, and I implement everything they suggest, as all the rules I set must be ‘gender-neutral’. Hence, they are my mentors; they constantly tell me how to advance these matters.”

General Upendra Dwivedi’s interview clarified that a successful military leader is shaped not only by strategic skills but also by ethics, sensitivity, and personal experiences. Whether it is the restrained decision made during Operation Sindoor or the lessons learned from his daughters, his perspective exemplifies balanced and modern leadership.
