Frances World Cup Dreams Dashed as Coach Deschamps Reflects on Semi-Final Defeat

Arlington, July 15: France faced a disappointing 0-2 defeat against Spain in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Following the match, head coach Didier Deschamps acknowledged that the team failed to deliver its best performance.

Deschamps noted that France struggled both offensively and technically, falling short of their usual standards. He stated that the team paid the price for not executing their attacking game plan. This loss also marked the end of France’s impressive knockout record, as it was their first defeat in a World Cup knockout match since losing to Germany in the quarter-finals of 2014. Previously, the team had gone 11 knockout matches unbeaten, with 10 wins and one draw.

After the match, Deschamps expressed the team’s deep disappointment, as everyone had set their sights on the final. “Clearly, we are very disappointed. Our goal was to reach the final, but we must acknowledge that Spain maintained complete control of the match. The players are very upset because our expectations were high. However, we have to accept that we were technically below our usual level against a team that truly dominated the game,” he said.

“This is mainly our own fault. We did not perform as expected and were not as dangerous in attack as we could have been. We made some technical errors in passing that could have created goal-scoring opportunities. This is the reality at the elite level, even though it is unfortunate. We did not play football the way we like to, and we paid the price for it.”

In the match held at Dallas Stadium, Spain took the lead in the 22nd minute with a penalty from Mikel Oyarzabal. In the second half, Pedro Porro added another goal, extending Spain’s lead to 2-0. France was unable to mount a comeback. When asked if France had learned a lesson in football, Deschamps acknowledged the quality of Luis de la Fuente’s team while expressing regret over his team’s technical shortcomings.

“Spain is a very strong team, and the players proved that once again in this match. We did not perform at our usual level. We made more technical errors compared to our previous matches. The players tried their best to prepare, but we certainly did not deliver our best performance,” he said.

Deschamps pointed out that Spain’s solid defense limited opportunities for France’s star player Kylian Mbappé. He acknowledged that when both the team’s attack and technical play falter, winning against a strong opponent becomes very challenging. “Spain defended excellently and gave us very little space. We could not find the right solutions, and our technical mistakes compounded our difficulties,” he added.

During the match, France suffered another setback when central defender William Saliba was injured and had to leave the field in the first half. Maxence Lacroix was brought on as his replacement. Deschamps commented on this change, saying, “That was my decision. Saliba was injured, and I did not want to take any additional risks with another player. At that moment, it seemed like the right decision.”

Now, France will compete in a playoff match for third place. Deschamps was also asked about his future, having previously stated he would step down after this World Cup. However, he declined to comment on the matter at this time.

“It is not the right time to talk about that. I am proud of this team’s achievements. We won the World Cup in 2018, reached the final in 2022, and now made it to the semi-finals again. Today, we must accept our defeat and congratulate Spain for their better performance. That is the reality of top-level football.”
