Kurnool, August 4: A special CBI court in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, sentenced a former official of Kadapa Airport to three years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹50,000 in a nine-year-old bribery case on Monday.
According to a statement from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the court found Mukundgiri Rangachari Srinivasan, the former Assistant General Manager (Air Traffic Management) and Acting Airport Director, guilty of soliciting a bribe of ₹50,000 from a contractor.
The CBI registered the case against the accused on July 24, 2015. It was alleged that Srinivasan misused his position as a public servant by demanding the bribe to settle pending bills and to avoid blacklisting the complainant’s firm.
The CBI set a trap and caught the accused red-handed while he was accepting the first installment of the bribe, amounting to ₹25,000. Following the completion of the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against the accused on February 29, 2016.
In a separate case from West Bengal, police in Birbhum arrested Sitesh Pramanik, the manager of fugitive stone quarry owner Tulu Mandal, also known as Mohammad Najibuddin, on Monday morning.
Last week, Birbhum police had arrested Minar Mandal, a close relative of Tulu Mandal, after recovering ₹28 crore in unaccounted cash and approximately 15 kilograms of gold valued at around ₹22 crore from his residence.
During questioning, Minar admitted that the cash and gold belonged to Tulu Mandal and that he was responsible for keeping them safe at his residence. Subsequently, police seized Tulu Mandal’s residence in Suri, Birbhum.
Now, on Monday morning, police arrested Sitesh to inquire about the source of the money and gold recovered from Minar’s residence.
