Kolkata, March 20: Kolkata police have detained five individuals for questioning following the tragic death of Arup Bandopadhyay. He was found dead after being trapped in an elevator at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for over an hour.
The incident occurred on Friday, prompting police from the Tala police station to take action based on a complaint filed by the victim’s father, Amal Bandopadhyay. A case of involuntary manslaughter has been registered.
Preliminary autopsy results revealed fractures in the ribs, arms, and legs, along with injuries to the lungs, heart, and liver.
On Friday morning, Amal Bandopadhyay visited the hospital to check on his minor son, who was admitted to the trauma care unit. During this visit, Arup became trapped in the elevator, and his body was recovered after more than an hour.
Reports indicate that no elevator operator was present during the time Arup was trapped. Additionally, hospital staff were unavailable to restart the elevator.
Saptarshi Chattopadhyay, the medical superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, confirmed that the complaint lodged by Arup’s father has been forwarded to the Tala police station.
Family members of the deceased claim that injuries were sustained while Arup was trapped. They stated that the elevator was functioning properly until a button was pressed, causing it to move erratically. According to them, the elevator stopped at one point, prompting the three individuals inside to attempt to exit. However, a folding gate outside prevented their escape. During this chaotic moment, Arup attempted to exit, but the elevator began moving again, trapping him between the elevator and the wall.
The family has also acknowledged that the absence of an elevator operator or any assisting staff constitutes a significant administrative failure.
