FIR Filed Against MP and Former Mayor in Srinagar for Spreading Misinformation

Srinagar, March 4: An FIR has been registered against MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former mayor Junaid Azim Mattu in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, for allegedly disseminating misleading information online. This was confirmed by the police in Srinagar district.

The police stated, “Based on credible information regarding the circulation of false, fabricated, and misleading content on digital and social media platforms, aimed at creating fear, disrupting public order, and inciting illegal activities, the Srinagar police have filed cases against Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and Junaid Azim Mattu.”

The statement further noted, “At first glance, the content in question reflects the spread of incorrect and unverified information capable of undermining public peace and social harmony.”

The police emphasized that “such deliberate attempts to spread misinformation pose a serious threat to peace, security, and overall stability.”

Accordingly, FIR numbers 02/2026 and 03/2026 have been registered under Sections 197(1)(g) and 353(1)(k) of the Indian Penal Code at the Cyber Police Station in Srinagar. Investigations into both cases have commenced.

Srinagar police reiterated their firm commitment to maintaining public peace and law and order. Citizens are advised to verify information from official and reliable sources before sharing online content and to avoid disseminating unverified material that could disrupt communal harmony or public order. Legal action will be taken as necessary.

The police also warned individuals against uploading incendiary content on social media that could lead to law and order issues. They identified several individuals involved in spreading false, fabricated, and misleading information, which could potentially disrupt peace and stability in the union territory.

Meanwhile, authorities have decided to continue restrictions in the Kashmir Valley for the third consecutive day. All schools, colleges, and universities in the region will remain closed until March 7. Examinations scheduled by the University of Kashmir for that day have also been postponed.
