Fifth National Reading Conference Held in Nanchang

Beijing, April 20: The fifth National Reading Conference took place in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, China, on Monday. Li Shulei, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) and head of its Publicity Department, participated in the event and announced the launch of the 2026 “National Reading Week.”

Attendees noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping places great importance on reading and supports its promotion. This has elevated national reading to the level of national strategy and will, providing unprecedented opportunities for its development. There is a need to deeply study and practice Xi Jinping’s cultural thoughts to better promote national reading, foster a book-loving society, and enhance the spiritual strength necessary for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Participants emphasized that reading is the most fundamental aspect of cultural development. It is essential to fully utilize the significant role of national reading in building a strong cultural nation and to encourage cultural innovation and creativity across the country. A robust social environment that fosters a love for reading should be developed, enabling people to cultivate lifelong reading habits and improve their quality of life. National reading activities must be conducted continuously and intensively, promoting the “China Filled with the Fragrance of Books” campaign and improving the construction and management of national reading facilities. The implementation of the “National Reading Promotion Regulations” is necessary to institutionalize and legitimize reading encouragement efforts, creating a strong environment for a love of reading, quality literature, and effective reading practices.

This year’s “National Reading Week” will be held from April 20 to 26, featuring various activities, including a national reading conference focused on the theme of “Promoting National Reading and Building a Book-Loving Society.” The aim is to ignite enthusiasm for reading within society and promote the establishment of a book-loving community.
