The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a significant change in the FASTag issuance process for cars, jeeps, and vans, effective from 1st February 2026. The mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification step will no longer be required when issuing new FASTags for these vehicles.
This decision aims to reduce delays and complications associated with FASTag activation. Until now, the KYV process involved repeated document submissions, such as uploading the Registration Certificate (RC) and photographs, to verify the vehicle linked to the FASTag. This often caused delays and inconvenience to users.
Under the new rules, banks will take full responsibility for vehicle verification before issuing FASTags. They will access vehicle details directly from the VAHAN database, and if the information is not available there, verification will be done using the RC. This means that once a FASTag is issued, no separate KYV verification will be required.
Previously, KYV was an additional verification step to ensure that the FASTag was correctly linked to the vehicle and to prevent misuse or duplicate tags. However, due to frequent delays and technical issues faced by users, NHAI decided to remove this step to streamline the process.
From 1 February 2026 onwards, all necessary checks will be completed prior to FASTag issuance. Existing FASTag holders will no longer need to undergo regular KYV verification. Additional verification will only be conducted if complaints arise, such as incorrect vehicle linkage, misuse, loose tags, or fraudulent issuance.
For vehicle owners, this change means a faster and simpler FASTag purchase and activation process. Users can start using their FASTags immediately after issuance without repeated document submissions or multiple interactions with banks or customer service. Only complaint-based cases will require further verification, significantly reducing unnecessary hassle for users.
