New Delhi, March 20: Fanny Utagushimaninde of the Rwanda cricket team has made history by becoming the first woman to score a century on her T20 International debut. She achieved this remarkable feat during the Nigeria Invitational Women’s T20 International tournament in Lagos, scoring an unbeaten 111 runs off just 65 balls against Ghana. With this performance, Fanny has also become the youngest player to score a century in Women’s T20 Internationals.
At just 15 years and 223 days old, Fanny broke the previous record for the highest individual score on a T20 International debut by a woman, which was held by Australia’s Karen Rolton. Rolton scored 96 not out against England in Taunton in 2005.
The record for the youngest century was previously held by Uganda’s Proscovia Alako, who scored 116 runs against Mali in Kigali in 2019 at the age of 16 years and 233 days.
In men’s cricket, four players have scored centuries on their T20 International debuts, but none of them were from full member teams. Canada’s Matthew Spoors leads this list with an unbeaten 108 runs against the Philippines in 2022. France’s Gustave McKown is the youngest player to achieve a century in T20 Internationals, accomplishing this at the age of 18 years and 280 days.
Thanks to Utagushimaninde’s century, Rwanda posted a total of 210 runs for the loss of three wickets. Alongside her, Marvel Uwase contributed with an unbeaten 32 runs off 19 balls.
Ghana’s bowlers conceded a total of 28 extras, including 25 wides. Chasing a target of 211 runs, the Ghana team managed only 88 runs, losing 8 wickets in their 20 overs. The team struggled to maintain partnerships, with no batsman able to settle in. Rwanda won the match by a significant margin of 122 runs.
