New Delhi, June 13: Following the crash of an Indian Air Force AN-32 transport aircraft in Jorhat, Assam, numerous questions have arisen regarding the causes of the accident. Defense expert Praful Bakshi has provided insights into potential causes and key aspects of the ongoing investigation.
Bakshi suggested that an initial possibility could be a tire burst during landing, which may have caused the aircraft to veer off the runway. However, he noted that it is unusual for a plane to sustain such extensive damage from a tire failure alone. He emphasized that it remains unclear whether the aircraft exited the runway and fell into a ditch or if there was a sudden explosion related to fuel or cargo. Additionally, he mentioned that details about the cargo being transported by the aircraft are still unknown.
The defense expert elaborated on the role of the AN-32 aircraft, describing it as a “workhorse” of the Indian Air Force, known for its reliability and frequent use. This aircraft is designed to operate in various weather conditions and challenging geographical areas. Its primary functions include logistics and transport, delivering essential supplies to troops on the front lines, conducting paradropping missions, and landing on short runways.
When questioned about the accountability of Air Traffic Control (ATC) in the incident, Bakshi stated that investigators must first ascertain the last communication between the aircraft and ATC before the accident. He explained that it is common practice worldwide for ATC to withhold detailed information in the early stages of an investigation, as the direction of the inquiry is often uncertain. Conversations may be confidential, and all facts are typically not disclosed until the investigation is complete.
Bakshi concluded that the true cause of the accident will only be revealed after a thorough investigation.
