Jakarta, May 9: The eruption of Mount Dukono in Indonesia’s North Maluku province on Friday has resulted in the deaths of three individuals.
Rescue officials reported that efforts are underway to safely evacuate approximately 20 trekkers trapped by the volcanic explosion.
According to the Xinhua news agency, the eruption occurred at around 7:40 AM local time, sending a massive plume of volcanic ash soaring nearly ten kilometers into the sky.
Local rescue authorities have warned residents to avoid any activities within a four-kilometer radius of the crater. They also cautioned that heavy rainfall could lead to mudflows from the volcano.
Earlier this year, in February, Mount Dukono erupted, prompting the country’s volcanic and geological disaster mitigation center to issue warnings for aircraft.
Located on Halmahera Island, the volcano had previously released ash clouds reaching approximately 2,000 meters in height, with dense white to gray clouds spreading southward from the crater.
To mitigate aviation risks, the Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) issued an orange alert, the second-highest level, advising aircraft to avoid flying within five kilometers of the volcano.
Airlines have been advised to exercise caution regarding ash clouds, as they can significantly impact flights.
Residents, tourists, and visitors near Mount Dukono have been urged to stay clear of the Malupang Warirang crater’s four-kilometer zone.
People living in the vicinity have been advised to keep masks handy to prevent respiratory issues caused by ash inhalation.
Mount Dukono stands at 1,087 meters above sea level and is one of Indonesia’s 127 active volcanoes.
Last month, Mount Semeru in East Java province also erupted multiple times. On April 6, its eruption sent ash clouds rising 1,100 meters above its summit, according to the volcanic and geological hazard control center.
An officer at the Semeru monitoring post reported that the ash clouds, ranging from white to gray, were moving southward with moderate intensity.
