Dehradun: The Badrinath and Kedarnath temples in Uttarakhand will soon restrict entry for non-Hindus, according to the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTS). The decision aims to allow access only to Hindu devotees in these ancient temples.
Committee’s Decision on Entry Restrictions
The BKTS has announced that this restriction will apply to all temples under its jurisdiction, including the prominent shrines of Badrinath and Kedarnath. BKTS chairman Hemant Dwivedi confirmed that a formal proposal will be presented in the temple committee board meeting to implement the ban on non-Hindu visitors.
Temple Reopenings and Related Pilgrimage Dates
Badrinath temple, which remains closed during the winter months, is set to reopen on April 23. The reopening date for Kedarnath temple will be declared on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri. Additionally, the other two Char Dham sites—Gangotri and Yamunotri—will reopen their gates on April 19, coinciding with the festival of Akshaya Tritiya.
Context of Religious Entry Restrictions in Uttarakhand
This announcement follows ongoing debates in Uttarakhand regarding entry restrictions for non-Hindus at major religious sites. Earlier this month, posters appeared at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar declaring the area restricted for non-Hindus, sparking controversy. These posters, put up by Shri Ganga Sabha, described the area as a ‘Hindu zone’ and stated “Entry prohibited for non-Hindus.”
Shri Ganga Sabha’s president, Nitin Gautam, explained that the posters were meant to inform citizens about legal guidelines and were not intended to create misunderstanding. He emphasized the importance of public awareness about rules to avoid conflicts and ensure peace during religious gatherings, especially with the upcoming Ardh Kumbh Mela.
The demand for restricting non-Hindu entry, particularly in Haridwar, has been growing as preparations for the next Ardh Kumbh Mela advance. Authorities and organizations are focusing on maintaining law and order while preserving the sanctity of these revered pilgrimage sites.
