New York, June 30: England defender Tino Livramento has successfully undergone surgery following a calf injury. This injury forced him to withdraw from the World Cup at the last minute.
The 23-year-old player, who has represented his country in five matches, sustained the injury during training in Florida while the England team was finalizing preparations for their opening ‘Group L’ match against Croatia.
Due to this injury, Livramento had to return to his club, Newcastle United, for treatment. Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah has been called up to replace him in the squad. Currently, England’s team consists of six central defenders and only three full-backs.
Newcastle United provided an update on Tuesday, stating, “Newcastle United confirms that Tino Livramento has successfully undergone minor surgery. The defender, who returned from World Cup duty with an injury, is expected to make a comeback during pre-season.”
England is set to face the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Wednesday. Coach Thomas Tuchel may make further changes to his lineup.
The English team topped Group L, defeating Panama 2-0. However, doubts remain about their ability to break through disciplined ‘low-block’ defenses after a goalless draw with Ghana.
Jude Bellingham showcased impressive performance by scoring from the first corner and creating a chance for Harry Kane to net England’s second goal. Although England has not conceded any goals, there were gaps in their defense that stronger teams than Panama could exploit.
The DR Congo is viewed as a measure of improvement in African football. The team reached the Round of 32 with a victory over Uzbekistan, a respectable draw against Portugal, and a narrow 1-0 loss to Colombia in the group stage.
