Monterrey, June 30: Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman expressed uncertainty about his future following his team’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup after a penalty shootout loss to Morocco. He admitted he is still processing the outcome at the Monterrey Stadium.
According to Xinhua, Koeman stated, “I have not given up. I will think about my future. The disappointment from the match is still very fresh. I will reflect and perhaps reach a conclusion by tomorrow morning.”
He added, “When we saw Morocco in our group, we knew it would be a tough draw, but that’s football. We put a lot of energy into this match. Morocco created better chances than we did. We took the lead, and I didn’t think they had a real solution. They scored a goal by chance. It was even more painful in stoppage time. We were also unlucky in the penalty shootout.”
Koeman defended his decision to switch to a five-man defense, denying that his strategy was overly defensive.
He remarked, “We conceded very few goals against Sweden and Tunisia. If the equalizer hadn’t happened, people might have praised this decision. I felt this change was necessary. In previous matches, we often gave the opposition too many chances. If that had happened tonight, we might not have even reached extra time. People watch the match from the outside. I am with the team every day. If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t change anything.”
However, Koeman acknowledged that his team’s attacking shortcomings were a concern.
He noted, “I felt we could have been more dangerous on the left with Micky and Cody. We could have moved the ball faster. We reached good positions on the right a few times, but the final pass was not good.”
The Netherlands has reached the World Cup final three times in its history (1974, 1978, 2010) but has lost on each occasion. With their exit from the 2026 World Cup, the wait for a title will extend for at least another four years.
