Empowering Women Strengthens Society, Says Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya

Kolkata, March 8: Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, emphasized that empowering women leads to stronger families and communities. He highlighted the necessity of increased female participation in sports and fitness activities for the nation’s progress.

Dr. Mandaviya participated in the Fit India Pink Cyclothon in Kolkata to celebrate International Women’s Day, promoting fitness and cycling among women. The nationwide Sunday on Cycle initiative saw enthusiastic participation from citizens, reinforcing the message of fitness and community engagement.

He stated that cycling is an effective way to maintain a healthy lifestyle and a clean environment. Such initiatives help cultivate a culture of fitness and collective responsibility among citizens.

Stressing the importance of women’s participation in sports and public life, he remarked that empowering women strengthens society. When women are strong, families and communities thrive, contributing directly to nation-building.

Notable participants in the cyclothon included Olympian and Arjuna Award winner Bombalya Devi Laishram, Chief Commissioner of Bharat Scouts, Avinash Kumar Gupta, Everest conqueror Piyali Basak, Indian women’s football team goalkeeper Adrija Sarkhel, and Olympian Sushmita Singha Roy.

In December 2024, Minister Mandaviya launched a significant public movement called Fit India Sunday on Cycle. This campaign is part of the larger Fit India Movement initiated by PM Narendra Modi on August 29, 2019, aimed at making fitness a daily habit and inspiring a healthy lifestyle.

Fit India Sundays occur weekly, with this week’s event dedicated to women’s empowerment.
