Mumbai, February 19: The National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) is significantly transforming the lives of rural women associated with self-help groups in Jaunpur. Over 150 to 300 women from more than 15 groups are now economically empowered, creating decorative and useful items from cow dung, including lamps and pots.

Notably, these women no longer need to wander local markets to sell their products. An exporting company has agreed to purchase their items, allowing their cow dung lamps and pots to be exported as far as Dubai. Each lamp will earn the women a minimum of four rupees.

Currently, the groups produce approximately five quintals of cow dung lamps daily. Due to increasing demand, they now require seven quintals of cow dung each day. This surge in production is expected to raise each woman’s monthly income to around 6,000 rupees, significantly improving their financial status.

Jitendra Kumar, the self-employment commissioner, stated that the mission aims to strengthen the economic position of the women involved in these groups. He noted that the agreement with the company ensures a steady demand for their products, creating sustainable income sources for the women.

One group member, Sunidhi, shared that she formed a self-help group with ten women in 2020. They received 110,000 rupees in government assistance to kickstart their venture. Since then, the members have saved ten rupees daily, accumulating over three lakh rupees in capital to launch new projects. Currently, 15 teams from the group are actively producing cow dung lamps, pots, and other items. Sunidhi expressed relief that a company will now pick up their products directly from their homes, alleviating their market concerns.

Another member, Usha, mentioned that they were previously limited to household chores without any employment. However, joining the group has made them self-reliant. She is part of the Devi self-help group, which received 125,000 rupees in initial government support to start lamp production. Each woman in the group now anticipates earning around 6,000 rupees monthly. They hope that every member will find work and sustain their livelihoods through this initiative.
