Kolkata, March 9: The full bench of the Election Commission of India (ECI), led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, arrived in Kolkata late Sunday evening from New Delhi. The team is set for a busy schedule over the next two days.
Upon arrival at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, the Chief Election Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, Manoj Kumar Agrawal, and the state’s Chief Secretary, Nandini Chakraborty, welcomed CEC Gyanesh Kumar and his team.
CEC Kumar will kick off the visit on Monday morning with a visit to the famous Kalighat Kali Temple in South Kolkata, located near Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence, before commencing the official schedule.
According to the planned agenda, the full bench will meet with representatives from various registered political parties on Monday from 10 AM to 12 PM, allowing each party a 10-minute slot for discussion. As the ruling party in the state, the Trinamool Congress is expected to receive the first slot during the ECI’s discussions.
Initially, it was decided that the delegation meeting CEC Gyanesh Kumar would consist of three representatives from the Trinamool Congress, including Lok Sabha members Mahua Moitra and Kalyan Banerjee, along with Rajya Sabha member Samirul Islam. However, late Sunday night, the ruling party announced the inclusion of three additional representatives in the delegation.
The two extra members are Firhad Hakim, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Urban Development, and Chandrima Bhattacharya, the Finance State Minister (Independent Charge), both from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The third additional member is Rajeev Kumar, the recently retired Acting Director General of West Bengal Police, who is set to become a member of the Rajya Sabha for the Trinamool Congress.
After completing the two-day schedule, the full bench of the commission will return to New Delhi on the evening of March 10.
