Mumbai, August 11: Two earthquakes were felt in Palghar district of Maharashtra on Monday night within just one hour. Both tremors registered a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale, occurring at a depth of only 5 kilometers beneath the surface, according to the Palghar district administration.
The first earthquake struck at 10:04:11 PM on August 10, with its epicenter located at 19.883 degrees north latitude and 73.164 degrees east longitude. Approximately one hour later, at 11:00:52 PM, a second tremor was recorded, with its epicenter at 19.912 degrees north latitude and 73.167 degrees east longitude. The depth of this earthquake was also measured at 5 kilometers.
The back-to-back tremors created a sense of panic among residents in Palghar and surrounding areas, prompting many to evacuate their homes. Fortunately, there have been no reports of damage or injuries from either earthquake.
Earlier, on Saturday night, residents in Nashik district of Maharashtra also experienced an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3. According to the National Center for Seismology, this tremor occurred at 10:59 PM on August 8, with its epicenter at 20.424 degrees north latitude and 73.682 degrees east longitude, also at a depth of 5 kilometers.
Geologists note that low-magnitude earthquakes are common, but frequent tremors can heighten public anxiety. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and take necessary precautions rather than panic.
