EAM Jaishankar Meets Ecuadors Foreign Minister to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

New Delhi, April 29: India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met with Ecuador’s Foreign Minister Gabriela Somarriba on Wednesday. The leaders discussed enhancing cooperation in key areas such as trade, agriculture, and capacity building.

Additionally, Minister Somarriba paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by laying flowers at Raj Ghat.

In a post on the social media platform X, Minister Jaishankar expressed his pleasure in welcoming Foreign Minister Gabriela Somarriba Rosero, who is on her first visit to India. He stated, “We discussed ways to deepen cooperation in trade, health, agriculture, digital sectors, and capacity building. We will collaborate in multilateral forums.”

He welcomed Ecuador’s decision to initiate the process of joining the India-led International Solar Alliance and the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA).

Jaishankar noted that Ecuador is already a member of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. He also announced that an agreement has been reached regarding funding for Quick Impact Projects.

“The agreement on funding for Quick Impact Projects is a step towards deepening our development partnership,” Jaishankar said.

Minister Somarriba arrived in New Delhi this morning for a three-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs welcomed her arrival on X, stating, “A warm welcome to Ecuador’s Foreign Minister and Minister of Human Mobility Gabriela Somarriba Rosero upon her arrival in New Delhi. Her visit will further strengthen ties between India and Ecuador.”

Last November, Margarita visited Ecuador on an official tour and met with President Daniel Noboa Azhin. They discussed enhancing and diversifying bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

During her visit, MOS Margarita also engaged with Ecuadorian ministers, deputy ministers, and officials to deepen collaboration in agriculture, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, training, education, culture, tourism, trade, textiles, health, and pharmaceuticals.

MOS Margarita held a meeting with Somarriba, during which both ministers signed an MoU on cooperation between the diplomatic training institutions of India and Ecuador.

Margarita and Somarriba jointly inaugurated India’s resident embassy in Quito, underscoring India’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Ecuador.
