During a flag-raising ceremony on May 8, Jaishankar expressed gratitude to Trinidad and Tobago’s Foreign Minister, Senator Paula Gopee-Scoon, and her government for their hospitality.
On May 9, the Ministry of External Affairs released key points from his address. Jaishankar noted that the relationship between India and Trinidad and Tobago is rooted in shared history, the struggle against colonialism, and a strong bond through cricket. He highlighted the similarities in cuisine, attire, traditions, and festivals between the two countries.
Jaishankar mentioned that festivals like Diwali, Phagwa, and Eid are celebrated with great enthusiasm in Trinidad and Tobago. Indian music, dance, television shows, and films are also quite popular there.
He specifically referenced cricket, stating, “Indians have always been great fans of West Indies cricketers. The legendary Brian Lara is immensely popular in India and holds great respect. Current West Indies players like Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, and Nicholas Pooran are also favorites among Indian fans. Sunil Narine’s performances in the IPL have been outstanding.”
Jaishankar described his third visit to Trinidad and Tobago as encouraging and expressed a desire to explore the local culture more closely.
The minister is on an official tour of Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago from May 2 to May 10, 2026. The presence of the Girmitiya communities has created a special connection between these countries and India. The nine-day tour aims to strengthen relations with these nations.
