Doha World Cup Postponed Amid Middle East Tensions

Geneva, March 21: The Artistic Gymnastics World Cup scheduled for April in Doha has been postponed due to the current situation in the Middle East. This decision was made by World Gymnastics.

In a statement released on Friday night, World Gymnastics said, “Following an emergency online vote and considering the current conditions in the Middle East, the executive committee has decided to postpone the 2026 edition of the Artistic Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup, originally set for April 15-18 in Doha. The event will not be rescheduled.”

According to reports from Xinhua, several teams have withdrawn their applications for this event in the Middle East since the onset of U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran.

World Gymnastics noted that there will be no penalties for late applications for the last two Apparatus World Cups scheduled in Cairo and Osijek in April. The organization expresses its sympathy for all those affected by recent events and hopes for a swift return to stability in the Middle East.

Additionally, several rule changes were approved during the World Gymnastics meeting. The highest number of results will now be considered for ranking calculations. The ranking list for the Apparatus World Cup and the qualification path for the World Championships will be based on the top three scores from five competitions in each apparatus that gymnasts participate in.

World Gymnastics stated, “Due to the uniqueness of this decision, there will be no changes to the official rules related to the matters mentioned above.”

The ongoing crisis in the Middle East has impacted several sports events, including the Formula One calendar. Two races have been postponed. Due to escalating conflicts, Formula 1 has canceled the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix scheduled for next month, reducing the 2026 season’s calendar to 22 races and extending the spring break. The races in Sakhir on April 12 and Jeddah on April 19 will not take place due to security concerns and logistical challenges related to the ongoing conflicts in the region.
