Chennai, May 8: Following the recent assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has requested a separate seating arrangement for its MPs in the Lok Sabha after its alliance with Congress ended.
Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, the leader of the DMK parliamentary party, wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, asking for a distinct block for DMK MPs in the House.
In her letter, Kanimozhi emphasized that the termination of the alliance has significantly altered the political dynamics between the two parties. She stated that it is inappropriate for DMK MPs to continue sitting alongside Congress MPs as they did previously.
She urged the Lok Sabha Speaker to facilitate a separate seating arrangement for the DMK parliamentary party, enabling its members to fulfill their parliamentary responsibilities effectively.
This development comes amid significant changes in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. In the recent assembly elections, Congress contested alongside the DMK, but post-results, actor-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilga Vetrikazhagam (TVK), received support from Congress.
The DMK leadership reacted sharply to Congress’s move, accusing the party of “political betrayal.” Senior DMK leaders openly criticized Congress during meetings with newly elected MLAs and party officials, claiming that Congress shifted its stance at a crucial political juncture.
Political analysts believe that the demand for a separate seating arrangement in Parliament is both symbolic and politically significant. It reflects the growing rift between the two parties, which have been collaborators in Tamil Nadu and national politics for a long time.
Experts also suggest that this development could impact opposition unity at the national level, especially as regional parties reassess their strategies for upcoming parliamentary elections.
Currently, there has been no official response from Congress or the Lok Sabha Secretariat regarding Kanimozhi’s letter. However, sources indicate that the Lok Sabha Speaker’s office will consider this request in accordance with parliamentary procedures and house rules.
