DMK Alliance Secures 10 Seats for DMDK Ahead of Tamil Nadu Elections

Chennai, March 25: Ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) has secured 10 seats within the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). This development is seen as a significant step towards the party’s political revival.

The seat allocation was finalized during a meeting between Chief Minister and DMK President M.K. Stalin and DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakant at the Anna Arivalayam in Chennai.

As part of the agreement, the DMDK will also receive one Rajya Sabha seat, with the party’s treasurer L.K. Sudhish being nominated for the position.

Founded by the late actor-politician Vijayakant, the DMDK has struggled to maintain its political influence in recent years. Thus, this agreement is considered crucial for the party’s future.

With the Congress party receiving 28 seats, the DMDK has emerged as the third-largest ally in the coalition. This move is viewed as a strategic initiative by the DMK to strengthen the alliance.

Speaking to the media after the agreement, Premalatha Vijayakant dismissed any speculation about confidentiality in the negotiations and expressed confidence in the coalition’s victory.

Echoing a famous dialogue from actor Rajinikanth, she stated, β€œEven if we arrive late, we will remain the latest,” signaling renewed enthusiasm within the party.

She mentioned that the party will soon form a committee to finalize the constituencies it will contest. The DMDK has already submitted a list of approximately 25 preferred seats to the DMK, including Virudhunagar, Virudachalam, Gudiyatham, and Rishivandiyam.

Premalatha emphasized that the party will adhere to “coalition dharma” and work to ensure the success of all allies. She expressed confidence that the DMK-led coalition could secure over 200 seats in the 234-member assembly.

With this agreement, hopes for the DMDK’s political comeback have strengthened, providing new momentum to the DMK-led alliance ahead of the elections.
