
New Delhi, April 10: In the ongoing ISSF World Cup Rifle/Pistol event, Divya TS secured fourth place in the women’s 25-meter pistol competition, while Gajanan Khandgale finished fifth in the men’s 10-meter air rifle event.
The competition is taking place at the Las Gabias shooting range in Granada, Spain. Divya scored 28 points in her third individual World Cup final, just missing out on a medal. Gajanan exited the men’s air rifle final with a score of 187.5. Rhythm Sangwan also reached the final of the women’s 25-meter pistol event, finishing in seventh place.
China’s Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist, Jiao Jiaruizhuan, won the gold medal in this event. She required two shoot-off rounds to separate herself from her teenage compatriot, Kong Jiru, who was competing for the first time. Both shooters were tied with 39 hits after a series of five rapid-fire shots. Paris Olympic bronze medalist, Kamil Jedrzejewski, claimed the bronze medal, finishing with 34 hits after the penultimate series, surpassing Divya.
Earlier, in the qualifying round, Rhythm outperformed both Indian shooters, scoring 586 and securing fifth place. Divya scored 585, placing seventh while staying ahead of Poland’s Agata Nowak. World Cup finals winner Simranpreet Kaur Barar finished in 30th place with a score of 575.
Gajanan Khandgale had a remarkable debut, qualifying for the final with a score of 634.3, placing second in the qualifying round. This score was just 0.2 points shy of Sweden’s Paris Olympic silver medalist, Viktor Lindgren.
China’s Olympic and World Champion, Sheng Lihao, who ultimately won the gold medal, qualified for the final with a score of 633.6, finishing fourth. Arshdeep Singh placed 21st with 629.5 points, while Dhanush Srikanth was 23rd with 629.2 points.
Gagan was one of six shooters who started the final in the 10-ring. He performed exceptionally well in this highly competitive field but was eliminated after the 18th shot, just 0.1 points behind Chinese youth shooter Ma Sihan, who finished fourth.
Serbia’s Aleksa Rakonjac won the silver medal, marking his first World Cup medal. Similarly, despite being a former World Champion and Olympic medalist, Lindgren also won his first World Cup medal (bronze).
All three Indian shooters successfully advanced through the women’s 50-meter rifle 3 positions (3P) elimination relay round. Olympian and World Championship medalist Anjum Moudgil led with a score of 592. Ayushi Poddar scored 587 in the second relay, while Surabhi Bhardwaj Rapole scored 582. Out of 75 participants, 58 shooters successfully qualified for the main qualification round.
On Friday, the final of the women’s 3P event will be the main highlight of the day, as Indian shooters aim to increase their medal tally further.
