Dispute Over Scrap Sale Leads to Murder in Mumbai; Two Arrested

Mumbai, March 13: The Vanrai police in Mumbai have arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged murder of a homeless scrap collector. One of the accused is reported to be a resident of Haryana. Both individuals were presented in a local court, where they were remanded to police custody for four days.

According to information from the Vanrai police, an unidentified person was found unconscious near Goregaon Hanuman Tekri. He was rushed to the Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari East, where doctors pronounced him dead upon examination.

Initially, the police registered the case under the Accidental Death Report (ADR). However, upon noticing severe head injuries on the victim, they grew suspicious. The deceased had no identification documents, leaving his identity unknown for some time.

To identify the victim, the police formed two teams and showed photographs of the deceased to around 50 to 70 scrap collectors in the Goregaon-Dahisar area. Some individuals recognized him as ‘Azhar,’ who worked with two others, Suresh alias Kaliya and Salim alias Nepali, in collecting scrap. Both of these individuals had gone missing following the incident.

The post-mortem report from the hospital confirmed that the victim died due to injuries sustained from an attack, prompting the police to file a murder case against unidentified individuals.

During the investigation, police apprehended Suresh alias Kaliya from Haryana. During questioning, he allegedly confessed to murdering Azhar in collaboration with his accomplice Salim alias Nepali. Following this confession, Salim was arrested in the Pathanwadi area of Malad. The police reported that the murder stemmed from a dispute over the division of money obtained from selling scrap, during which the accused struck Azhar with a stone, leading to his death.
