Bhopal, June 24: Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Digvijay Singh, completed his second consecutive term in the Rajya Sabha on June 21. This marks the end of his 12-year tenure. Throughout his time in office, he consistently raised issues ranging from national security and education to farmers’ concerns and social welfare.
Discussing Singh’s parliamentary journey, his personal secretary, O.P. Sharma, stated that the senior Congress leader was actively involved in parliamentary proceedings and committee work during his entire term in the upper house.
According to Sharma, Singh raised 1,010 questions related to governance, public welfare, agriculture, education, internal security, and constitutional issues over the past 12 years.
Sharma emphasized that Digvijay Singh always utilized parliamentary platforms to address issues affecting common citizens. Whether it was farmers, students, laborers, or matters related to governance, he made efforts to bring these concerns to the forefront of Parliament.
A member of the Congress since 1977, Digvijay Singh has held several significant positions throughout his political career. He has served as a five-time MLA, managed crucial departments such as agriculture, irrigation, and fisheries in the Madhya Pradesh government, represented the state in the Lok Sabha, and was Chief Minister from 1993 to 2003 before entering the Rajya Sabha in 2014.
In addition to participating in debates and discussions in the house, Singh has also been a member of various parliamentary committees, including those related to home affairs, finance, corporate affairs, and urban development.
He was also a member of select committees formed to investigate rules, privileges, and laws.
Sharma noted that some of Singh’s significant contributions emerged through parliamentary committees. He believed that during the widespread violence in Manipur, parliamentary committees should focus on the crisis and its humanitarian impact. He formally raised this issue before the committee.
The former Chief Minister’s personal secretary also highlighted Singh’s tenure as the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth, and Sports.
