Ujjain, August 29: On the auspicious occasion of Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha Pratipada, a grand Bhasma Aarti was held at the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple. Many devotees gathered to witness this divine event on Saturday morning.
Early Saturday, after seeking the blessings of Lord Veerabhadra, the temple doors were opened with the sound of drums and trumpets. As the devotees caught a glimpse of Baba Mahakal following the divine adornment and Bhasma Aarti, the temple resonated with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and mantras.
With the opening of the Mahakal Temple gates, water was offered to Lord Mahakal amidst chanting. The deity was bathed with Panchamrit made from milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juices. During the worship, the first bell was rung, and Hari Om water was offered. After the Kapoor Aarti, Baba donned a crown. The Bhasma Aarti was performed with the accompaniment of jingles, drums, and conch shells, while Baba Mahakal was adorned with Bhang, showcasing his divine form.
The temple priest conducted the Maha Aarti, and a large number of devotees witnessed the Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal. Many had queued since the previous night to have a glimpse of their beloved deity. Traditionally, men are required to wear dhoti and women sarees during the Bhasma Aarti.
According to tradition, the Bhasma Aarti is offered to Baba Mahakal by the Mahanirvani Akhada. It is believed that after the offering of Bhasma, Baba Mahakal reveals his form to the devotees. Each year, numerous devotees travel to the sacred city of Ujjain to participate in this revered ceremony.
