Delhi Traders Urge Ban on Protests Ahead of Diwali
Traders in Delhi request a ban on protests until Diwali, citing concerns over business disruptions during the festive season.

New Delhi, October 15 (Daily Kiran) : Amid the festive season, traders in New Delhi are expressing concerns over planned protests and marches in the capital. The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting a ban on large protests until Diwali and opposing the proposed “Lahra Do Tiranga” march scheduled for October 16 in Connaught Place.
CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal highlighted the anxiety among approximately 2 million traders in Delhi regarding the impact of these protests. He warned that key commercial areas such as Connaught Place, Janpath, Palika Bazaar, Khan Market, and Lutyens’ Delhi could be adversely affected, potentially disrupting business throughout the city.
The organization noted that recent protests had created lockdown-like conditions in Delhi, leading to a significant drop in both local and visiting customers. According to their statement, traders have incurred losses exceeding ₹2,000 crores due to these demonstrations.
With the ongoing Navratri, Ram Leela, and Diwali shopping season, CTI stressed that any major protests could hinder commercial activities. The organization also pointed out that uncertainty among buyers and traders from outside Delhi could negatively impact festive business.
In their letter, the CTI has urged the central government to prohibit any large protests until Diwali. They also appealed to event organizers to refrain from holding such gatherings during this critical shopping period to avoid adverse effects on business.
Goyal has released a video reiterating the CTI’s call for a ban on protests during the festive season, emphasizing the importance of ensuring uninterrupted market activities during this key time of year.
